So you want to copy DVD movies? I've been waiting for a long time to be able to copy them. Until now it hasn't been practical. A few months ago you could copy the DVD movies, but you had to break them up onto two DVDs (which was a waste). You might as well convert them to SVCD, they also take two discs, but they are normal CD's which cost 1/10th the price. Everyone has probably heard of DVD X Copy from 321 Studios. They have a new product out called DVD X Copy Xpress which is just what the doctor ordered. Not only is it dummy proof (add DVD blank, add original DVD movie, click COPY button, wait until blank ejects and copy is completed), it copies the DVD movie onto ONE DVD. So this sounds a little illegal right? Well, that's what the courts are going to determine. It really is a rights issue if you think about it. Hollywood must have it's profit, we all agree that you shouldn't be doing something for nothing. However, when that profit gets in the way of your rights as a consumer, where does the line exist? Who is actually crossing it here?
In my opinion it is Hollywood that is way over the line. First of all anyone with kids knows what it's like to keep a DVD in good condition. (It's impossible). They play the movies, they leave them out, you find them face down on the floor and the surface looks similar to that of a motorcycle accident victim. Here is the issue. You licensed the right to have that movie in your home video collection. You didn't BUY the media, because the license agreement makes you a licensee, not an owner of the content. So it really doesn't matter what form that content comes on, the fact is you own the right to view that movie in your home. So, if you scratch one, Hollywood is saying you need to go license the right to view it again when they say "Tough". Because that is what they expect (as they have been earning money that way for years because no one has been able to duplicate the DVD). They see your RIGHT to backup this media so that you can utilize your license fully as a MAJOR loss in income for them. Well I'm sorry, I feel the same way they do "Tough". I must have bought 6 copies of Babe while my child was going from age 5 - 8. Why did I have to do that? Why didn't Hollywood recognize me as a licensee and allow me to buy a replacement copy for the $.50 cents it cost for the DVD plus postage? No, they made me spend $15 bucks a whack because they get rich off of people with children. Well I've ranted and raved long enough. The fact is this, I now have a great program called DVD X COPY Xpress and I have started the process of making a production version of my DVDs. The originals can now stay in boxes upstairs, and the copies, nicely labeled and in cases remain downstairs where anyone can view or borrow them. If someone loses one, I don't lose out, and if someone breaks one, I don't lose out. It's that simple. I simply go upstairs, grab the missing DVD, make a copy, print up a label, put it in a blank DVD Case (avail anywhere on the net for about 40 cents) and replace it. In fact, Movie rental places should be doing this as well. They are licensed to rent out 1 movie per copy they actually own. They pay more for this right than you and I (the typical cost being about 60 - 90 bucks USD). They get movies that are scratched, ruined, lost and stolen all the time. This would be an enormous savings for them. One thing to definitely point out here is 321 Studios and their attitude toward piracy. They do not advocate piracy and have taken large measures to prevent people from using this tool illegally. First the program will ask you if the DVD is borrowed or rented. If you say yes, it will shut the program down. Next it will not copy COPIES of DVD movies. So you have to have an original. As if that wasn't enough, they opt'd to put in two more counter measures. The third feature is a big 8 second screen in the front of every movie you duplicate which outlines the fact that this movie is a backup. The last feature is a watermark tool that takes IP information and user information and inbeds them (secretly) into the DVD so any copy you make is traceable back to you. (You might not want to give a copy of DVD X COPY Xpress to a friend now, because if they abuse it, it could come back on you). It is obvious that the money 321 Studios spent to put these road blocks in the way of piracy means that they do care, and are interested in selling this product to responsible people that have the right intentions. DVD X COPY Xpress is a life saver. There isn't much to write about. You install it, you run it, put your Original in, put your Blank in, and click one button. That's it. It's a tool that is extremely useful. I had an issue getting my version in my computer. It didn't want to load the VSO drivers for some reason. The first tech guy I got went through a few things, but didn't really have the ability or the time to help me, his supervisor yanked him off the call after about 30 minutes of helping me. I was a bit let down by that. I called back though and got a guy that was able to fix me up in about 10 minutes. I guess I've had issues like that with a lot of companies, and some of them didn't have courteous employees. These guys were very personable, and even though the first one wasn't able to help me out, he was very nice and didn't make me feel like I was the idiot. I believe the second guy's name was Jason so you might want to ask for him :) How do I rank DVD X COPY Xpress?
